Select the right style for your season and terrain

Like any style of shoe, barefoot shoes are not created equal. You wouldn’t wear barefoot sandals in the snow, and you wouldn’t wear insulated waterproof boots on a hot summer day. Be sure to choose the right barefoot shoes for different conditions and terrains, with materials and construction specifically designed for each endeavor. For instance, a barefoot hiking shoe will have more reinforcement through the upper and a more aggressive lug patterning than a road-running shoe. And if you’re planning on wearing these shoes in the cold or snow, you’ll want to look for a pair with slightly more underfoot protection and waterproofed upper materials.

Prioritize supportive and protective styles

Wearing barefoot shoes doesn't mean giving up all support or protection, but different styles offer varying amounts of both. If you’re new to the barefoot shoe game, look for a pair of shoes that has an added insole. While not standard throughout all models, an added insole of 2-4 millimeters can help add comfort and support. Most of these insoles are removable, so you can pull them out when you’re ready to increase the ground feel. Shoes with a more foot-conforming upper (or that have more adjustability) will also aid in support.   • How do you transition to barefoot shoes?

    Start small! If you’ve never worn barefoot shoes before, the barefoot community often recommends starting your transition by wearing them for everyday use like running errands or walking the dog. During this period, you may notice the stabilizer muscles in your feet, ankles, and legs are more activated.


    Funck calls it “microdosing” barefoot shoes. “It’s the sense of adopting a gradual and measured approach transitioning from traditional, highly cushioned, overly supportive footwear to minimalist, barefoot shoes,” she says. “If you’re one of those people who want to run barefoot, Xero Shoes Partner and Run Coach, Eric Orton recommends starting with as little as five minutes in [barefoot shoes] then switching to your regular shoes.”

  • When should you not wear barefoot shoes?

    It’s important to note that there will be an adjustment to wearing barefoot shoes, and they won’t be ideal in some circ*mstances. You may want to consult your doctor before beginning the transition into wearing barefoot shoes for long periods of time. You should also avoid wearing barefoot shoes on super rugged or challenging terrain where you could experience bruising from the ground. “Those with arthritis of the big toe or midfoot, for example, may require a stiffer sole and more cushioning, so they may not be a candidate for barefoot shoes,” Podiatrist Dr. Alissa Kuizinas, DPM adds.
